As a child, when held by his grandfather Emperor Dezong, he declared himself 'the third Son of Heaven,' surprising the emperor. Later that year, eunuchs Ju Wenzhen, Liu Guangqi, and Xue Yingzhen had Li Chun created crown prince over the objections of Shunzong's close associates, who feared his intelligence.
